PUBLIC INFORMATION LECTURE GIVEN BY MICHAEL
Michael is Public Information chair for Intergroup, elected to coordinate Public Info service. No one to answer to on steering committee to make sure that the boroughs are supporting the public info.
Their purpose is to respond to requests from nursing homes, high schools and universities to provide info on what AA is and isn’t.
• P.I. does NOT give OUTREACHES, NO SOCIAL SERVICES, NO DEFINITION FOR ALCOHOLISM. Not Twelfth Steppers. Walk around trying to explain what AA thinks alcoholism is and isn’t and what we do to help.
• Orientation class written for volunteers, first and third Sundays, between 1pm and 3pm.
• Volunteers must come in for classes. Subsequently, they are put on the roster for service request.
• Lottery system for Outreach appointments.
• Calendar system for appointments.
• Purely objective… correct information.
• Sign up form available on the web.
• Doesn’t fill “special requests.” The essence of what they’re doing is the message, who delivers it isn’t important.
• If the volunteer presents info about subject matter, questions will be about subject matter. Keep focus off the individual.
• The new script for the P.I. speeches has been adapted from old script, with added tradition information and an insert from GSO.
• Being an example of AA different from P.I., i.e. cigarette butts on the sidewalk outside a meeting, what you tell your doorman.
• P.I. is preparing to send out a mass mailing for outreach.
• Clarification… orientations and man power needs to be assembled before requests can be honored.
• Call NY Intergroup with questions, have messages left with Michael from P.I.
• Tiffany has our forms.
• Sunday, January 21st next meeting.
