Minutes - July 30th, 2006 - Sharing Session

NYCYPAA Sharing Session: July 30, 2006

Erik
-Happy.
-Loves what NYCYPAA is doing and wishes he had more time to be involved.

Mark
-First time here.
-Not sure what NYCYPAA does.
-Doesn’t have any prejudices.
-Feels there is a lack of information.

Jared
-Thinks we’re right where we should be.
-Wants us to keep up momentum & doesn’t want us to decline.

Laura
-Thinks we do a lot of good things.
-Sees strong personalities clashing during business meetings: personal arguments instead of group discussion.
-Lateness & not showing up for commitments is a problem.
-How do we improve relationships with those who show animosity toward NYCYPAA?

Daniel
-Excited for the future of our committee.
-It’s nearly impossible to get everyone in NYC involved due to individual schedules.
-We should involve the Spanish District & Harlem… we’re kind of isolated right now.
-We should invite the General Service crowd to our events.
-People who are deterred by personalities, and therefore don’t come to our meetings, maybe shouldn’t be here anyway.

Teresa
-We’re doing a lot!
-Would like to see us do a Traditions Workshop.
-Afraid of us getting over-ambitious and dieing as a result.
-We should invite people to visit NYCYPAA instead of expecting them to come all the time.

Janusz
-We should do our events in coordination with other groups / committees.
-People shouldn’t take large commitments on subcommittees if they already have a demanding one on the regular NYCYPAA committee.
-Chairs should be activating their Co-Chairs.
-Certain personalities aggressively push their agenda on the group.
-We should think about splitting NYCYPAA meetings with Bid meetings so more people are involved.
-We need to find a way to make our meetings more attractive… making service fun.
-There should be an overlap in terms so that new chairs can learn from the person rotating out.

Rakhel
-NYCYPAA commitments really help her sobriety.
-How do we make ourselves available to young people who don’t know about New York City AA or Young People’s AA without creating a rift between us and General Service / Intergroup?
-Thinks that people may see us as the “goody-goodies” of AA, and therefore resent us.
-We need to connect with the other boroughs.
-She really enjoys our events.

Astrud
-Curious about service positions on NYCYPAA.
-We need to get flyers circulated to outreach better.
-Curious about the YP story collection project.

Brooke
-She loves NYCYPAA.
-People don’t come because of personalities and a feeling that there’s a popularity contest.
-Some feel that their voices are not heard, so they stop coming.

Cory
-Pass.

Oliver
-Stresses that we should make it clear that you don’t have to label yourself a “YPAA” to be involved in NYCYPAA.
-Feels that more meetings should have NYCYPAA liaisons.

Catya
-Wants NYCYPAA to bid for EACYPAA next year.
-Mentioned the anti-NYCYPAA sentiment.

Erik
-Had a great time at ICYPAA.
-Doesn’t really have a desire to see NYC host ICYPAA.

Mark
-Pass.

Jared
-Wants us to have Group Inventories more frequently.

Laura
-Thinks bidding for EACYPAA would be a mistake.
-Not sure if we are ready to host a convention.
-Thinks NYCYPAA should absorb the Bid Committee work into the regular meetings to increase participation… time would be split accordingly for NYCYPAA business and Bid business.
-We shouldn’t be bothered by those who put personalities before principles.

Daniel
-Thinks we should have certain Bid Committee positions elected to the regular NYCYPAA committee: Bid Book Chair & Hotels Chair.
-Thinks we should do Bid business in regular meetings.
-NYCYPAA chairs would assist.
-During business meetings, we should go around the room and give everyone the opportunity to speak to make sure all voices are heard and that no one dominates the discussion.
-He would like to see us create a virtual message board so we can communicate between meetings easily.

Teresa
-Doesn’t want us to bid for both EACYPAA & ICYPAA.
-Doesn’t want us to take on too much & fail at our commitments.

Janusz
-Thinks we should read from “The AA Group” pamphlet before each meeting.
-Thinks we shouldn’t try to “save” EACYPAA by bidding for it.
-Thinks we should create a NYCYPAA convention.
-We need to figure out the future of the Riker’s Island commitment.

Rakhel
-It’s hard for her to go to subcommittee meetings.
-We should find a way for people to participate in sub-committees without having to dedicate their Sundays to NYCYPAA.
-Doesn’t notice personality issues on NYCYPAA.

Astrud
-Thinks we should “Keep it Simple.”
-Feels like an outsider, but is feeling welcomed.

Brooke
-Not sure how she feels about bidding for EACYPAA.

Cory
-Against bidding for EACYPAA.
-Wants us to bid for ICYPAA.
-“Who cares if people roll their eyes about NYCYPAA?!”
-Would also like to see us create a message board.

Oliver
-Would like to see us have a half hour informational session about NYCYPAA every 1-2 months.
-He has no idea what’s going on most of the time.
